Specialism / UI UX Design Agency
UI and UX are two different jobs. Most agencies sell one and invoice for both.
Structure comes before surface. If the flows, hierarchy and states are wrong, no amount of visual polish rescues them, and treating the two as one job is how teams ship handsome software nobody can operate.

01
What the distinction actually costs you
When UX and UI are treated as one deliverable, the structural questions get answered implicitly by whoever is drawing the screens. Navigation emerges from whatever the first mockup happened to need. The data model leaks into the interface unchallenged. Nobody ever writes down why the product is organised the way it is, so the next team cannot maintain the logic.
The symptom is familiar: a product that photographs well and frustrates daily users. Screens are individually attractive and collectively incoherent, because coherence is a structural property and structure was never designed.
02
How we sequence it
Structure first: what objects exist, how they relate, what states they have, and what the user is trying to finish. Then flows: the sequence of decisions and the information needed at each one. Then interface: hierarchy, density, typography, colour, motion.
Working in this order means the interface has something to express. Working in the other order means the structure is a consequence of aesthetic choices, which is how products acquire three ways to do the same thing.
03
Where UI craft genuinely matters
This is not an argument that interface design is secondary. At density, interface craft is what makes a complex product legible: typographic hierarchy, spacing rhythm, restrained colour, consistent interaction patterns, motion that explains rather than decorates.
It is an argument about sequence. Interface craft applied to a sound structure compounds. Applied to an unsound one it is expensive decoration.
Signals
When this work is worth doing
If two or more of these are true, the conversation is probably overdue.
- Ask who does the researchIf the answer is 'the designer, informally', you are buying interface work with a research label attached.
- Ask to see a structure artefactAn information architecture, a flow model, a state map. Agencies that only show final screens only made final screens.
- Ask how states are handledRequest the empty, error and permission-limited states from a past project. This separates serious product work from portfolio work quickly.
- Ask what they argued aboutA partner who never disagreed with a client's brief was not thinking about it independently.
How we scope it
Three ways this usually runs
Durations are typical rather than fixed. We scope after the first conversation, not before.

Questions we hear before we start
UX design determines what the product does, how it is structured, and what sequence of decisions a user moves through. UI design determines how that is expressed visually and interactively: hierarchy, typography, colour, density, motion. Good UI cannot rescue poor UX; good UX with poor UI is usable and unconvincing.
